6G-LEADER at EuCNC & 6G Summit 2026

From June 2nd to June 5th, 2026, Málaga hosted the European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC) & 6G Summit, bringing together the world’s leading minds in next-generation mobile networks. Among the different initiatives on display, there was the 6G-LEADER project’s booth, transitioning its ambitious theoretical framework into tangible, real-world network validations. As an ecosystem built on openness, interoperability, and sustainability, 6G-LEADER utilized this opportunity to showcase how advanced signal processing and highly reconfigurable hardware are bridging the gap between near-field theoretical models and deployable 6G infrastructure.

Live Demonstrations at the 6G-LEADER Booth

Throughout the four-day event, the 6G-LEADER exhibition booth experienced high traffic from industry stakeholders, researchers, and funding agencies eager to interact with the project’s innovative prototypes. Visitors were treated to two distinct, live hardware demonstrations that highlight the project’s strategic pillars of sustainability, innovation, and vendor flexibility:

Liquid Antenna Reconfigurability

Presented by project partner Javier Martinez from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), this demo captivated technical and non-technical audiences alike. Attendees witnessed the electrical actuation of fluidic liquid metal droplets shifting in real time. By dynamically reconfiguring its electromagnetic properties, this “shape-shifting” aperture alters its transmission parameters (such as resonant frequency and polarization) to defeat physical signal blockages. This breakthrough introduces spatial diversity into a single structure, offering a viable path for integrating fluidic antennas into future commercial handsets to safeguard high-frequency links.

The Integrated O-RAN Stack
Presented by Fabian Göttsch from Massive Beams, this setup showcased a modular Frequency Range 3 (FR3) Open RAN radio unit integration. The demonstration blended Massive Beams’ FR3 MODRAD hardware with a near-field fed reflective intelligent surface (NFED-RIS) module and the srsRAN OCUDU software stack. By utilizing a limited number of active antennas to feed a massive array of low-power, passive phase shifters, the system achieves huge beamforming gains. This sustainable approach demonstrates how mobile operators can transition from 5G to 6G FR3 base stations, expanding coverage to match legacy networks while completely maintaining current cell-site density without prohibitive power or thermal constraints.

From Theory to Validation: 5 Proof-of-Concepts (PoCs)

The innovations shown at the booth represent a broader validation strategy embedded across the project’s lifespan. 6G-LEADER is actively deploying five concrete PoC prototypes designed to test its architecture across large-scale, open, and programmable testbeds—including the Digital Catapult SONIC Labs in the UK, and the federated CNIT testbeds (ARNO in Pisa and S2N in Genoa) in Italy.  To make these complex electromagnetic and architectural setups accessible to the public, the booth featured five detailed videos mapping out each PoC’s goals, frameworks, and targeted KPIs.

Uniting the Global Community: The AI-Native RAN Workshop

6G-LEADER’s impact at the summit extended well beyond the exhibition floor. The project successfully organized and participated in the dedicated workshop titled “International Cooperation for AI-Native RAN for 6G.”

This workshop tackled a critical paradigm shift: the emergence of radio access networks where artificial intelligence is a foundational component rather than an afterthought. Bringing together experts from across the EU, US, Japan, Republic of Korea, Brazil, and Africa, the sessions explored the full lifecycle of AI-enabled RAN research—including real-time processing constraints, MLOps deployment pipelines, and advanced experimental platforms like EU SLICES-RI and US NSF PAWR. 6G-LEADER was expert-represented on the cross-regional research panel by Rolando Guerra Gomez from Telefónica, who joined global stakeholders to align standardization visions across the AI-RAN Alliance and 3GPP.

Moving Forward: The 6G-LEADER Roadmap

6G-LEADER continues to build substantial traction within the global wireless ecosystem. By replacing high-consumption active antenna arrays with open, energy-efficient, and semantically-aware hardware realizations, the project is paving a clear path toward the next generation of digital infrastructure.
